Amonai Francis (Miss Grenada National Queen 2023)

,

Hello dear readers, and welcome to this, the second interview here at ‘Dit Mwen Tout.’

When the idea first came about for this blog, there were already specific people that were marked as “need to speak to”, because of their previous interactions with the sister blog ‘Story Mwen To Tell’. However, God said “I got you!” and then there was this pull into the world of endless candidates. It was as if the attention and intention had materialised beautiful people instantly. I came across Miss Francis in the thick of Grenada’s Carnival and pageantry season through a spectacular singer friend of mine (Sonika!) who was on her team.

I was thrilled when she agreed to the interview! She won the titles of, Miss Photogenic, Best Swimwear, Best Costume and Best Interview along with her crown in August 2023. She also actively and aggressively promoted her platforms of Mental Health Awareness and keeping the Traditional Carnival Alive in Grenada, visiting several high schools for presentations. Miss Francis is also an active member of the Youth Parliament and as a great speaker, gives wonderful presentations and debates.

Dear readers, I present to you: Amonai Francis!

Thank you. I am honored. These are such great questions! I am Amonai Francis, the reigning Carnival Queen for Grenada, 2023.

Prior to my participation in the national Carnival Queen Pageant, I did not participate in any other pageants. However, during my secondary school experience, there were many pageant-like competitions in which I participated.

I entered pageantry out of my love for performing. I also felt that pageantry was a
very influential industry. To me it was an avenue through which I could showcase my talents as well as advocate against many social ails and issues.

One fact about me that may surprise people is that I live on an island, but I cannot
swim!

It’s always important to me to be optimistic. I take affirmations, positive self-talk, and
prayer very seriously and so it is very easy for me to find the motivation to get
through difficult situations.

The responsibilities of the title are something I would have thought about even before
auditioning for the pageant. While there are many, I understand the importance of
each task and responsibility. I am very enthusiastic about my reign and about helping
as many people as I can with what I can.

Balance has always been very difficult for me. However, prioritizing (through making
schedules and the use of calendars) has made it less overwhelming. It’s also important to surround myself with people who are very supportive and understanding.

My reign will focus on two areas that I am very passionate about. These are; mental
health awareness and its sustainability, and revitalization of traditional mas in
Grenada.

Beauty to me equates to self-love. I think confidence is key. Once you are able to
embrace yourself fully, that is true beauty.

As a Christian and specifically a catholic, I do believe in God as a supreme ever-
loving healer, protector, and model figure. My life purpose and persona all align with
my catholic beliefs.

In October 2021, I lost a close friend of mine to suicide and though I was hit by the unpredictability of the occurrence, since then, I gained a clearer picture of the fact that it can also be avoided. Losing my friend really did spark the desire in me to help as many people as possible, who may be facing a difficult time in their life and thinking about giving up.

I think that a lot of Christians have a false concept of what God wants of us. Thus, I would say that industries like pageantry which showcase poise, talent, confidence, and grace; and which also serve as platforms where societal issues are addressed, are great, despite being misunderstood often looked down upon.

My experiences with my faith started as a child. I have never felt disconnected from
God. I think faith is a journey and it isn’t linear. However, for me, difficult and
challenging experiences with hurt and pain helped to draw me closer to God. I am an
active member in my church community which helps me to get to know God even
more.

The biggest goals on my vision board would be toward my career. I’ve always had a
dream to sing or dance on Broadway. I do hope I can someday achieve that goal.

Singing is my source of serenity. Moreover, prayer as well as time with my friends in
nature also do help.

In three words I would say I am kind, sensitive and optimistic.

  1. I love this interview. Your questions were different. Not your regular questions asked of a beauty queen. Two things made me fall in love with her: “I live on an island but can’t swim” and her definition of beauty. I love reading about people in different countries that I can so relate to. Please keep sharing.
